Striking Joint Research and Allied Institutions Staff Union, JORAISU, yesterday, demonstrated at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, over the refusal of Federal Government to accede to their demands. The protesting members of Joint Research and Allied Institutions Staff Union, JORAISU, of the National Institute for Sports, NIS, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The body, comprising Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions, ASURI; Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU; Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research and Allied Institutes, SSAUTHRAI, of the National Institute for Sports, NIS, commenced a strike on November 14, 2017 over alleged refusal of government to meet the agreement reached on January 31, 2011 on the payment of 12 months arrears of 53.37 percent salary increase.

Other demands the union said have not been met by the government include release of condition and scheme of service of research institute, establishment of a central body, National Research Institute Commission, NARICOM, adequate funding of research institutes and retirement age of 65 for non-research staff as is obtainable in the university.

Speaking on the protest and strike, the NASU leader, Mrs Lawal Kehinde, said it was “to get the attention of government and the public on the nonchalant attitude of the government to the plight of the workers in research institutes.”

She said they were not going to call off the strike, adding that “it is no retreat no surrender as we will not go back to work until the government answers us.”

STAFF of research institutes and allied institutions in the country, yesterday, in Abuja announced their commencement of indefinite strike over alleged non-implementation of agreement they entered into with the Federal Government.
